WELCOME TO LUMEN BLOG
A lumen is the basic unit for measuring brightness. It is a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source. Lumen is a project encompassing podcasts, blog writings, dharma talks, trainings, retreats, and workshops that integrate yoga asana, yoga philosophy, buddhist philosophy, Chinese 5-Element philosophy and diagnostic/meridian work from shiatsu, with life.
POWER AND CONFIDENCE: If power is not a measure of effort, but rather a measure of lack of effort… (like a really good lever) How easy can this be? AND what makes something easy?EFFORTLESS EFFORT:Though many paths are difficult, the ones that are right for us have a coherency of flow that makes the difficulty easier to bear….there is a sense that working with the individual difficulties isn’t about “individual” moments, but that the work we do within them has a great effec […]read more
CORE STRENGTH:I have been teaching a lot of classes on building core strength and pairing that with core values and alignment. When our spine is out of alignment it will automatically limit our force production and our range of motion. So we will feel weaker, exhausted sooner, tighter, and more limited. Trying to get stronger or more open when we are not aligned is an uphill battle ending either with going nowhere, going backwards, or injury. When we live our l […]read more
WHAT ARE YOUR CORE VALUES? ENVISIONING AND CORE VALUES:Close your eyes and take yourself to a moment in time where everything was in alignment with you. Go to a memory.Take yourself to a place you want to focus on envisioning the next few years of life in. This can be at work, in relationship, in adventure, friendship, whatever you feel inspired to manifest or envision. Keep your eyes closed and let it all play out, feel it in your body. When you are ready to open your eyes, d […]read more

WHAT MAKES A GOOD BEGINNING?I’ve been feeling stagnant, for what feels like foooorrreeeevvveeer, and wanting a huge change and suddenly all the pieces started coming together. I got really clear on all the parts and I started doing things and then… I just stopped wanting to do anything at all… like complete desperate aversion from everything I wanted to do… and totally just wanted to watch movies and disappear from life… and I’ve been feeling really wrecked about it, especially wh […]read more
AFRAID OF FAT:A friend of mine just started making Ghee and he puts it on all of his food… including in his coffee. I daintily started using ghee because it is so delicious and supposed to be good for you… but was fighting my epic fear of oil and fat with every little dab into the jar. But… it’s so tasty that a few weeks later I found myself dipping my entire spoon in the jar, pulling out a spoonful and putting it DIRECTLY into my mouth, multiple times per day! & […]read more

IT’S IMPORTANT TO LOOK LIKE AND IDIOT: LET GO In August, I went to see one of the best yoga teachers in the world… Mancuso Manos, and he actually gave me a little reprimand, for trying to help him during one of his demonstrations… he was in an upside down position and fumbling around to try to get this blanket out of his way and it was bumping into all this other stuff that was scattered on the floor, so I started to reach over to help him and he saw it before I even ext […]read more
KNOCK-KNEED I’ve got a new student who came to me for some knee pain. She has “knock-knees” and one is more knocked inward than the other. She has had surgery already and doesn’t want to go through it again. As we started working together she expressed how much she hates the way her legs look. In teaching her to use her inner legs, I brushed her inner knee and asked her to tighten and lift… just at my touch and a putting of a little awareness there, she moaned in disgust. She tel […]read more
